Will there be a High Line-style park built above the Prospect Expressway? How about apartments or stores on top of the arterial highway?

These are some of the proposals suggested in “PX Forward,” a new study released Monday that was initiated by Borough President Eric Adams and conducted by four NYU urban planning graduate students.

Stretching between the Gowanus Expressway and Ocean Avenue, the heavily trafficked 2.3-mile expressway was planned by Robert Moses and constructed between 1953 and 1962. Running below grade, it bifurcates parts of South Slope and Windsor Terrace.

Following a study of the largely residential area, which encompassed all of Windsor Terrace and parts of Kensington, Greenwood Heights, South Slope and Sunset Park, the report offers a series of different recommendations.

One of the most extreme is the creation of what they call the “Prospect Path,” an above-ground park that would run above the expressway, and the possibility of real estate development in underutilized highway shoulders.

Even more severe is the possibility of adding housing or commercial property on top of the deck that would run over the highway.

Others suggestions, like the construction of more protected bike lanes, the installation of public art, the connection of already existing greenspaces and the extension of local bus lanes, are more conventional.
