Barclays Center Rising
This photo is the best one we’ve seen of the progress at the Barclays Center, the future home of The Nets and the first piece of the Atlantic Yards project. And it should: It was sent out by someone in-house to potential buyers of basketball tickets yesterday!

Right, it’s not in my neighborhood but I pass it on the way home from PS or BoCoCa at night. I don’t really care what sports team is there but, unless I’m wrong, it was for years a blighted hole in the ground of unused track, dilapidated buildings, etc. The immediate surrounding area was nothing to be proud of.
This will eventually be a real boom to brooklyn and the surrounding area. AAnd that, if you can’t figure it out on your own, is a good thing.
“pedantic” God forbid i make another typing mistake on a blog.
Your padantic personality is not one that grows on people, babs.
OK, what about your secretaries? Where will they live? The waitress who serves you lunch? The cook and dishwasher? Artists, musicians, creative types who make NYC such a great place to live? BTW, there are two active and three retired cops who live on my block in Brooklyn, along with a few retired MTA employees (who never take the subway – pathetic!).
And DIBS, you’re the one who commented about the only time you gave thought to AY was when you went by in a car service (See that? You’re = you are, as opposed to your, which is the possessive. I know you know these things, and it’s actually more keystrokes to make the error above. Come on!).
More than a few live in Brooklyn, Staten Island and Queens. Way more than a few.
I’m all for that too, babs. I haven’t quite given up on Coney Island yet though. But agree- we should never stop being vigilant. Or pushing back. It’s not like a Ratner or the politicians really have our best interests at heart. Call me cynical but I don’t see them giving a rat’s ass about what my or your or anyone else’s life is like.
This blaming the victim attitude is so tired. The reality is that both Forest City Ratner and the Empire State Development Council have refused to negotiate with the community in any meaningful way. The lawsuits have been the result of the complete breakdown of the political process. Many individuals and groups, besides DDDB, tried to engage the developer and the state so don’t try to piant the opposition as just DG and his supporters.
The latest nonsense is the creation of a 2-square block parking lot — the 2nd largest in Brooklyn — btw Carlton and Vanderbilt/Pacific and Dean. How about that for creating blight? There’s no affordable housing or open space on the horizon for up to 25 years.
babs most of the people you cited – especially police and fire – havent lived “here” as in NYC for decades – in fact many dont live even near “here” unless you consider Suffolk, Rockland, Orange and Bucks Co near. And frankly even if you offered many of these people 6rm apartments on the park for $1000mo they still wouldnt choose to live here. Yet I dont see the practical doom you seem to be foretelling.
I take the subway to/from work.
babs, you’re hand wringing and gnashing of teeth about “a City of billionaires” is really getting a bit histrionic.
