Barclays Center Rising
This photo is the best one we’ve seen of the progress at the Barclays Center, the future home of The Nets and the first piece of the Atlantic Yards project. And it should: It was sent out by someone in-house to potential buyers of basketball tickets yesterday!

The Gehry apartment buildings were horrible looking. Ms. Brooklyn was certainly better than what’s being built now but the blame lies squarely on Ratner and the political process. Did they really expect New Yorkers to roll over and play dead? Did they expect Brooklynites to do that?
I don’t profess to know what is or isn’t right from Brooklyn- only time will tell that. But what isn’t good for Brooklyn- or any other borough- is the way this project was rammed down our throats. The shameful deal the MTA agreed to, the circumventing of the rules supposed to protect communities and the abuse of eminent domain. That’s good for no one.
This thread would get 300 posts if we learned the city was going to create bike lanes leading to a new Whole Foods Market being planned to open inside the arena that would allot space for stroller parking.
“I could go on and on, but I’d take a homeless shelter filled with mentally ill substance-abusing ex-cons in my backyard over this taxpayer-funded debacle any day.”
Have you run that by your neighbors???
Pathetic.
“OK, what about your secretaries? Where will they live? The waitress who serves you lunch? The cook and dishwasher? Artists, musicians, creative types who make NYC such a great place to live?”
I thought most of them were driven out of most of Manhattan and brownstone brooklyn years ago due to rising home costs and rents.
Grand Army, I don’t think many people here are defending the political process that got us to this point. However, in the end, in my opinion, the right thing for Brooklyn overall is being done. I wish the means to the end was a lot more transparent too, but it’s done.
I’ve been discussing it all day, Lenore. Or did you just jump in, throw in your 2 cents (actually, more like 200 cents) and then jump out?
Your last comment speaks volumes and makes it really difficult to want to have a conversation with someone so clearly irrational.
As lechacal said…we won, so why don’t you get back over to PPW and start up again with protesting the bike lanes over there. They could use your help.
It’s too bad Barclays had to go and get convicted of laundering money from Iran in US public works projects like this. Now every time I hear the name of the arena, I can’t help but think of Iran.
Thanks for soiling such a pristine project with your dirty money, Barclays.
Denton – I saw FCR’s projected project costs – there is no way that they were going to build gorgeous Gehry towers. This was always going to be a bland, metro-tech style affair.
11217, you made your point that you have no response to any of what I said other than to call names. You deserve AY. Congrats.
“I’m glad all you sports fans are so thrilled.”
Actually, I’m not a sports fan so I’m not thrilled. In fact I’m rather pissed. Instead of getting some gorgeous glass towers, with an arena as the part you have to put up with, thanks to the three million dollar Goldstein and his fellow nimbys, we get ONLY the arena.
Nice going guys.
11217, you rock today.
Oh, and the only repub I’ve ever voted for was Bloomberg.
