Fedders knows no bounds…This new development at 36th Street just east of Fourth Avenue is nearing completion. While it ain’t much to look at, we gather that it will offer some much-needed family-sized apartments to the Sunset Park mix. It also has the added benefit of rear views over Greenwood Cemetery. The tipster who sent this in says (whose parents are buying in the building) says you can pick up a three-bedroom in the $500,000-range. Can anyone confirm? GMAP P*Shark DOB
“On top of that, those are windows with air conditioner slots. There is no way anyone can even climb out there.”
I think there is a door to the right (as we look at the picture) of the window/ac unit slot.
Not that this negates anything else mentioned in your post.
So then give then a real balcony, 2:50. If at least two windows are in the same apartment, then extend the balcony so it’s big enough for more than a cafe table and one chair. Otherwise they are a useless eyesore. You can’t entertain on them, you can’t even squeeze more than 2 people on them. These are only big enough for a couple of plants and room to go out and have a cig, and flick the butts on the people below. If that’s an amenity, then standards have really dropped.
On top of that, those are windows with air conditioner slots. There is no way anyone can even climb out there. They are TOTALLY USELESS!
Fifty bucks says that 2:50 is the developer of this monstrosity.
Anon at 2:50–you may need to up your meds. Buildings have had balconies, but usually flush with some part of building or on buildings set back from property line, not jutting out from building or looming over sidewalk like that. And, obviously, people do give a f–k what they look like. There’s pretty vocal opposition to them because many, many people have a visceral reaction against them.
what planet do you people live on? these balconies have been standard practice in the boros for years, and have nothing to do with jews. they’re marketed as AMENITIES to people WHO LIKE THEM. Because they let you SIT OUTSIDE. And no one gives a fuck what they look like, because they live INSIDE the building.
“Still, when did these balcony horrors become de riguer in all new contruction?”
i don’t know, but they are everywhere. and they are awful.
I think the real reason for the balcony mania that is sweeping cruddy new construction is to sell the “terraces” as added space or outdoor space. I believe 1:16 is correct about needing to be beneath the sky for religious reasons; the look is more soviet than anything. Yay. So happy that’s the aesthetic model for the future of Brooklyn.
Top floor for Jews and the rest of the building for the goyim!
No, anon 12:31. The terraces on the buildings used by the Jews for Sukkot have to be staggered so that there is sky above each one. You usually see balconies of those buildings arranged in diagonal manner.
