As we were driving through Red Hook in the rain two weekends ago, our eye was caught by this new building going up at 166 Beard Street. Actually, it’s really two buildings with a shared courtyard. As we understand it, the owner is going to live in the smaller building on the left and the one on the right will be rentals. The design is by Coburn Architecture. Nice, right? GMAP P*Shark DOB
Looks nice – very nice design, modern but not out of place. Compare to 397 Greene (a later post from today), which is just a mishmash of classical stuff on a on oversized stucco box.
The windows are operable (a requirement for residential construction). To my mind, they are fine. They are probably more efficient than double-hung and perfectly in keeping with contemporary design of the buildings. Double-hung or multi-light windows wouldn’t be an improvement. (Nor would a cornice!)
I like the cobblestones, I think they should just be re-set so they will be even while driving.
Oh – i didn’t notice the windows. They don’t open?
and replace the annoying, uneven cobblestones.
right?
Looks OK, I would have preferred double hung windows though, with screens.
Red Hook will not have “arrived” until they bury the power lines.
