Over on WNYC, the Leonard Lopate show has just kicked off a contest to find the worst buildings in New York City. From the horse’s mouth:

Is there a building in New York that you thinks is really ugly, or has a fatal design flaw? Think that house or parking garage in your neighborhood is an eyesore? Then take a photo, and send it to us!

The producers have set up a group on Flickr to take submissions; the architectural historian and Times scribe Christopher Gray will appear on the show on September 25 to discuss the submissions and to give his own picks. Sounds like fun to us! We just kicked off the submissions with the bane of our existence—220 Greene Avenue (aka the Greene Avenue Atrocity), a project we’ve chronicled ad nauseum during its miserable less-than-two-year existence.

  1. Yes, you have chronicled this ad nauseum. I say that this exercise is self congratulatory and self indulgent. If there was some goal other than mocking, then I would think it was worth it, but I find this tiresome.

  2. There is another building, i think on Bedford near lafayette.. or perhaps on Nostrand that is just as bad, and obviously built by the same developer as the one on bedford and fulton. I’m surprised no one has mentioned it on here.

  3. Regarding water damage, I remember when the building was being built, Brownstoner had photos showing misaligned brickwork, and other really shoddy building practices. Anyone wanting to make a case just needs to look back in the archives.

As awful as this is, it doesn’t hold a candle to the POS at Fulton and Classon. That one is the poster child of Ugly.

  4. I’m told by a reliable source that this building has major structural problems, including water damage/leakage in front due to improper sealant/brickwork done on the facade. how did this get past the building inspector… obviously paid off. Should this inspector’s license be revoked?

  5. I”m told by a reliable source next door that this building has serious design flaws, including water leaking in the front due to improper cement/sealant being used along the brickwork/cementwork. How did this get passed by the building inspector? Someone was paid off apparently…
