For the past week or so we’ve seen some development coming to the old La Playa space in Park Slope, at 230 5th on the corner of President. First we saw paper going up, and then very recently the yellow awning disappeared. A commenter on Brooklynian also noticed movement there, but there aren’t many clues to what’s actually moving in. Has anyone heard anything? GMAP

  1. I tried both BBQ incarnations (Biscuit and Lookout Hill) and they were both pretty bad. Playa was also underwhelming.

The real curse seems to be some sort of resident malevolent spirit that causes people to open lousy restaurants.

  2. Playa didn’t actually fail – they did an okay business. They closed after there was some internal squabble and one of the partners left, taking the liquor license with him. Before Playa, it went through two different iterations as BBQ places – the first one failed because it was crappy, and the second one failed because no one realized it was different from the first one. Anyway, will be glad to see something rather than nothing here.

  3. Well, let’s look at the bright side here. Everytime a restaurant comes and goes in this location, we get to experience a new cuisine in this spot. Sucks for the restauranteurs, but hey, can’t win em all.

  4. Fjorder,

A commenter on Brooklynian says of this space: “That place is cursed because the old man that used to run the dry cleaners in that location was such a nasty bastard.”

Take that for what you will.

  5. My wife was telling me that before Playa, it was a series of restaurants that seemed to never last—does anyone believe that a spot can be cursed? The location is great! How can one restaurant after another just epically fail?
