Going to be walking around Brooklyn Heights on Saturday, May 12 for the Brooklyn Heights Association House Tour? Why not stop in at the Underground Thrift Store at Plymouth Church for a special shopping day. We will be open at a special time on Saturday, May 12, 2012 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. When you stop at the annual house tour tea from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M. at Plymouth Church, stop in the Underground Thrift. Show your program for 10% off your purchase. The Underground Thrift Store features a curated collection of upscale and designer clothing and accessories for women, men and children and beautiful collectibles for the home, in the loft space in historic Plymouth Church. And, you will be shopping for a cause since the Underground Thrift donates 25% of its net proceeds to organizations that fight human trafficking and modern-day slavery.
Bayou n’ Brooklyn Cajun Music Festival
We’ve added a new wave of names to the line up for this year’s spring weekend May 11 through May 13, 2012, at Jalopy Music Theatre in the Red Hook district, 315 Columbia St., Brooklyn, NY 11231. It’s like a visit to NOLA followed by some Acadiana without leaving Brooklyn, and bring your dancing shoes! sounds of Cajun fiddles, and zydeco rubboards fill the air for three days and nights of music and dance by Cajun Hall of Famer Jesse Lége & Bayou Brew (creating Saturday’s Gumbo pot) and powerful Johnny Ace & Sidewalk Zydeco, Krewe de La Rue, Empty Bottle Ramblers, and Offshore Aces. Day passes are $15 or $35 for all three days. Children under 12 years old are admitted free. Workshops $25. Festival pass includes all night dance hall bands, community jam sessions, art show, and ‘Un-Written Stories’ culture session.
Brooklyn Flea + Smorgasburg
The Flea and Smorg return this weekend to the great outdoors. On Saturday, the Flea is held at 176 Lafayette Ave. (between Clermont + Vanderbilt Avenues) in Fort Greene. On Sunday, the Flea will be at 27 North 6th Street (between Kent Avenue + East River). Saturday at the Williamsburg location is also the home of our all-food market, Smorgasburg. The Flea features over a 150 vendors offering a great mix of vintage, antiques, jewelry, and amazing food. Saturday & Sunday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Free.

Enriching Your Home with Art
A.I.R. Gallery hosts a workshop on how to begin buying art that enlivens your home or office. Join us for this exclusive opportunity to view affordable works by contemporary women artists and get tips on buying art. A.I.R gallery staff members and artists will be available to answer your questions and offer advice. Gallery Director Julie Lohnes demystifies the art gallery and discusses how to search for art you will love. Barbara Siegel, artist and Associate Professor at Parsons The New School for Design, explores drawings and other works on paper through creative examples selected from the gallery’s flat files. Jeanette May, artist and faculty at the International Center of Photography, presents contemporary digital photographs and traditional silver prints, and discusses photographic media, techniques, and editions. Community Tree Giveaway at Pier 6
In cooperation with the New York Restoration Project and MillionTreesNYC, Brooklyn Bridge Park is pleased to host a Community Tree Giveaway! On Saturday, May 12th from 10am to 12pm, New York City residents can come to Pier 6 to pick up a free tree and learn how to plant and care for them. Trees will be given away to the first 150 NYC residents through a reservation system and on a first-come, first-served basis until supplies run out. Trees cannot be planted on rooftops, terraces, or in city parks and only one tree can be adopted per address.
Mother’s Day Walking Tour at Greenwood
Join us on Mother’s Day to celebrate some of the most colorful and influential women of the 19th and early 20th centuries who are buried here. Matilda Tone, wife of the Irish patriot; pioneering doctors Susan McKinney Steward and Mary Jacobi; abolitionist Abigail Hopper Gibbons; and actresses Laura Keene and Kate Claxton rest here along with the more notorious Lola Montez and Elizabeth Tilton. Tour is led by veteran Green-Wood tour guide Ruth Edebohls. Tickets are $10 for members of the Green-Wood Historic Fund and $15 for non-members. Reservations recommended.
