VPR: Puccini’s Il Tabarro
Today, Friday, September 7, and Sunday, September 9, Vertical Player Repertory presents Puccini’s Il Tabarro, performed on the deck of an historic oil tanker, the Mary A. Whalen. The opera, which originally took place on a barge in Paris, is set in Red Hook circa 1938, the year the Whalen was built. The performance is a collaboration with PortSide NewYork and American Stevedoring Inc. Photo ID is required. Friday and Sunday, 7:00 p.m. Opera admission $25; food and wine reception $35. 70 Hamilton Avenue, corner of Hamilton Avenue and Van Brunt Street.
CH Blog/RePop Anniversary Party

Fort Greene Fest
On Saturday, Fort Greene Park will become a stage for local music, food and film. George Spencer Opening

MGMA Customer Appreciation Day
This Saturday, September 8, the Marcus Garvey Merchants Association will celebrate its inaugural Customer Appreciation Day and Family Fun Day Carnival. The festivities will take place on Marcus Garvey Boulevard, between Macon and Macdonough Streets, and feature free carnival games and attractions, arts and crafts workshops, storytellers, a Chicago Steppin’ dance workshop, a Sidewalk Stroll fashion event, poetry and spoken word performances, and other live entertainment. Astroland Demonstration
On Sunday, September 9, a demonstration will take place at “high noon” to show support for the amusement park and to call for a one-year reprieve by developer Joe Sitt and Thor Equities. Banners and colorful clothing recommended. The demonstration is being organized by Brian Gotlieb, whose petition to save the park can be signed at the Coney Island History Booth.
