Movies With A View: Dreamgirls
Movies With A View is one of the city’s premiere outdoor film series with an eclectic lineup of films and breathtaking views of the NYC waterfront. This Thursday the film to see is Dreamgirls, the story of a trio of female soul singers who climb the pop charts in the early 1960’s. Loosely based on the Supremes, Jennifer Hudson and Beyonce Knowles shine in this heart-wrenching chronical of the group’s rise to fame. Thursday, August 12. 6 p.m. – 11 p.m. Movie screened at sundown. Free. Pier 1, Brooklyn Bridge Park.
The Linnaean Libation League’s Centennial Soiree
In 1910, Brooklyn Botanic Garden was transformed from an ash dump to a glorious urban sanctuary. On August 12, celebrate the Garden’s centennial with a one-of-a kind affair organized by the Garden’s Linnaean Libation League, featuring fine food, drinks, and even sport inspired by the marvelous era of its founding. Guests are encouraged to dress in the style of the early 20th century to participate in a classic croquet game on Cherry Esplanade, drink champagne cocktails, and much more. Waterfront Workouts with the Fitness Guru
The Fitness Guru returns with Pilates Mat classes! Join instructors as they teach you to properly activate the muscles of your abdomen and back to create an incredible amount of stability in your torso. Classes are free and open to all skill levels, but space is limited. Registration begins at 6:30pm each evening. A limited number of mats are available for rental for free (with valid ID). Emerging Brooklyn Artists
Emerging Brooklyn Artists, a celebration of the Brooklyn art community will be held at Design Within Reach’s Brooklyn Heights Studio. They are showcasing Brooklyn artists’ work throughout the studio, all with their own interpretation of a Brooklyn theme. Stop by to meet local designers, clients and art dealers, including Clementine, Kory O’Donnell, Kate Fauvell, Todd Beobel, Sloke One, Jeff Beler, Andres Hoyos and Jason Covert. Opening Reception: “SHOW and PROVE”
This is more than an art exhibit. This is about the commitment of two artists to enrich their communities and others around them. The idea behind ‘SHOW and PROVE’ is to provide a few emerging talented artists with an opportunity to showcase their work, while at the same time giving something back to the community that has inspired and supported their collective growth.
