  1. Re: the PTA story:

Keep in mind that what is described as funds “raised” are actually mostly fees that parents pay for the afterschool program. The vast majority of that $500K is actually passed through to pay for instructors, staff, supplies, security, etc. for the afterschool program. The program is a huge help for all the working parents. The news outlets conveniently forget to mention this, since it makes for a much less interesting story.

  2. “I’m not poor. I’m speaking about the families in the shool who can’t give.”

Are there a lot of poverty stricken Jews in Bay Ridge?

  3. Actually no Iphone. I have a Samsung. No kindle or ipod. The one TV in my house is so old that even my 63 year old mother is offering to buy me a new one because in her words “the screen is so small” So don’t make assumptions.

I’m not poor. I’m speaking about the families in the shool who can’t give. I’m talking about the kid in my son’s class whose bed is in the kitchen of their apt. Families like that.

I’m saying if they were able to give our PTA would have more money to spend.

  4. PTA Story

Feel most sympathy for Ms Hogan’s kids. Imagine having that hanging over your head at your school and your mom potentially in the slammer.

  5. Donatella, our school actually gets a little bit more than that a year, and 80% of the students qualify for free lunch. In our case it’s not the parents (although some contribute generously), but local businesses and our tireless, relentless principal.
We don’t have teachers’ assistants any more, to keep the arts and language programs free.

PTA thievery is a problem; I know of two other cases, one in Manhattan and the other in Queens, currently investigated by the DOE. That’s always the problem when you have large amounts of money, poor oversight by mostly volunteers. I hope this woman gets the book thrown at her, selfish cow.

  6. I’m probably going to go out on limb here and guess that you don’t have teacher’s assistant in teh classrooms but you have a nice Hi-Def flat screen tv (or two) in your apartment. and an iPhone in your pocket. blame the rich. right.

  7. The PTA story just goes to show you how “easily” one school can be better than another. It is simply the pocketbooks of the parents. It would take at least 10 years for our school in Bay Ridge to raise that much money.

This is why grading schools is ridiculous. The grade does not take into account the socioeconomic differences in the school.

We do not have teacher’s assistants in the classrooms, simply because we cannot pay for them.
