Not mentioned in the NYT article, is whether these no-reservation hot-spots will bump a celebrity diner ahead of me if I’ve been waiting on line for 30 mins or more? I’d set the place on fire if they did that to me.
I’ll always love Blue Ribbon for actually sticking to their no-res-first come – first served policy after they seated my un-fabulous ass ahead of a gorgeous yet peeved Salma Hayek and her then boytoy,Josh Lucas.
Another night I got seated ahead of Tyson Beckford and a NY Yankee (forgot which). This would not have happened at a Batali joint.
I agree Brooklyn Chicken. Also, a good restaurant will always have people that will wait for no-shows.
To hell with what they’re calling this “democratic” process. That’s just a de rigeur given the current “losing its popularity faster than you can shake a stick” administration
They should take your reservation with a credit card number, and charge you a hefty no-show fee. Lots of people don’t keep their reservation, which costs the restaurant money.
These reataurants will quickly lose their “buzz” as do all restaurants and then they’ll wake up and start taking reservations.
I agree that Zagat should go after this bullshit.
“on line” makes you sound like a New Yorker, which the rest of the world laughs at.
i thought the rule was that it’s in line when it’s a line indoors and on line when it’s a line outdoors? they both sound fine either way tho.
*rob*
“Get Ready to Wait in Line” –sorry, NYer’s don’t wait in line. Wait on line maybe. But no way “in line”
