Oh Montrose — this makes me think of San Fransico. Nude protests and other events around the clock — the beach, Bay to Breakers, Critical Mass, Burning Man. There’s a large women-only topless bike ride every year at Burning Man.
in that case they’ll have their headlights on
“Topless Bike Protest”
It’s gonna be cold on Sunday!
Not all of us leerers are sex-deprived.
While I don’t think anyone or any group has a right to stop people from using the public streets, I think riding topless through Williamsburg in the winter as a protest is beyond stupid.
First of all, it will be a leering gawk fest which a bunch of sex deprived straight men might find entertaining, but does little to promote any kind of peace on this issue. Secondly, it’s demeaning to women. To any woman planning to join this protest, men just want to look at breasteses, yours, they don’t care about bike lanes, or whether you catch pneumonia.
Thirdly, it is really disrespectful to the Hasidic community. Hell, it’s disrespectful to the thinking community. It’s one thing to stage a peaceful protest in Williamsburg. Or even a mass bike rally of clothed people. It’s a whole ‘nother thing to disrespect a culture you don’t understand or agree with by riding topless through that community. It’s not cool, and it’s not a way to get the situation changed. It will only drive a further wedge between the Hasidic and non-Hasidic communities that will never be forgotten, and will most likely result in them lobbying, and probably getting, ALL of the bike lanes taken out, or some other draconian over-reaction on their part.
I know this will not be a popular post, but there it is.
Are these going to be topless standard chicks or topless hipsters? These details are important. Are any latinas going to be involved?

I hope every continent will be representing at this one friend. God bless America!

I’m not a cyclist, and thus have little personal interest in the outcome of the bike lane issue. However, I am incredulous at the fact that the Hasidim have the ear of the mayor over something which they have so little invested in. And I’m disgusted at the fact that the real reason they don’t like the bikes lanes is because some women riding bikes in their neighborhood may not be dressed in the full black, down-to-their-ankles outfits that they are accustomed to. All the while claiming that safety is their concern. It’s the same reason why they want the New York marathon route moved: fear that women dressed in spandex and running bras might tempt the men in their community. Total BS.

I have no problem with religious people who want to live traditionally with big families but once you go to the city for any kind of special treatment it becomes a public, secular issue, governed by secular laws. If cyclists are not in violation of nudity laws they can do whatever they want as long as they’re not hurting anyone as is their constitutional right. The nude protest, while pleasing to the eyes should also rather effectively demonstrate this fact.
