  1. So can we plan to do it. I am really up for it- I have seen Westboro at too many things, upsetting families who are grieving, inciting hatred, just being disgusting wackos. I doubt anyone would ever mistake them for real Christians. And yeah- it will be hard (especially for me). It’s the day before Yom Kippur, which is always terribly difficult for me.

  2. Correct, they are not remotely “Baptist” or even a church, but a demented (yet legally crafty) small hate group run by one guy and his family; what they seem to crave above all else is attention and media heat. They are particularly virulent and vicious, and have been banned from entering the U.K. They hate everybody, it seems, except themselves, with a fervor that would be comic were it not for their loathesome campaign to torment grieving families at funerals; apparently they have been punked on-camera by Michael Moore and Sascha Cohen in “Bruno.”
Except for necessary security measures to preserve the safety and dignity of the synagogue’s congregants, I’d suggest the worst punishment for them would be a media blackout and a big ol’ Brooklyn yawn. Sadly, they will of course incite a media circus, and will be reported credulously as a “right-wing” church because of their appropriation of the word “Baptist.” For those who would like to get their anti-far-Right ya-yas out with a counter-protest, however, I’m afraid these folks are too far out even to count as far-Right. They hate the army, Catholics, Jews, and Swedish vacuum cleaners. (Really.) They’re just psycho nutters. My condolences to the folks at Beth E. that their holy days must be marred by them.

  3. I’d join a counter protest, too. As jester said, these people are in no way “Christian”. Total nutjobs who are so indoctrinated they will never change their outlook, or see the rampant hypocrisy of their positions. You can’t argue with them, best thing to to is a silent protest, although that will be really hard.

  4. I’m up for a peaceful counter demonstration. Best thing is for a lot of people to stand quietly with supportive signs for the shul- and for NYC- and show these clowns what real grace, dignity and compassion is all about.

  5. Busy that morning but it makes me SICK thinking about those Kansans.

Could not be a less Christian thing to do than tell people those things. Unfortunately most people just think they represent all of Christendom.
