  1. DeLepp- that was priceless. And these people are in office (oh g-d!).

My sister would sometimes get overwhelmed with her screaming children throwing tantrums over “no.”. One thing I always told her- you’re the parent. You let them do this to you now, you lose control and the ability to guide them. Luckily my sister snapped out of that really fast and my niece and nephew are lovely grown ups. But the real point is that no parent can control the environment to suit themselves and raising children to believe that you can control everything and everyone around you is a very bad message.

  2. 1st it is interesting that everyone focused on PS regarding the ice cream story, except only a playground (barely in) PS was mentioned and the rest of the anecdotes were from well outside PS – but of course you people are fixated on PS so its all you talk about.

2nd DIBS – no offense but you 2 dad anecdote and conclusion is retarted – you think you can tell what type of parents upbringing a kid is getting from observing them on the subway – how old are you? Because if your older than 25 you should have learned by now that YOU HAVE NO IDEA what goes on in other peoples lives/behind closed doors. – That applies to your closest friends/relatives much less pure strangers on a train.

  3. i just came on this thread to verify that the responders and responses to the ice cream story were exactly who and what i thought they’d be. and, yes, they are. too funny. sometimes i wonder what you childless people would do for entertainment, if not for park slope parents. i personally don’t have a problem with telling my kid no, i think “predatory” is a little too strong, and yeah, it’s irritating when the truck is idling across the street at 10pm… but it’s beyond mere irritation when the truck is parked right next to the swingsets blowing exhaust all day long for days on end.

new2hood – she thinks the trucks/vendors are predatory toward and bad *for kids.* chip shop isn’t mobile, isn’t hanging out by the playground (and, actually, isn’t even very kid-friendly). sure, as a restaurant owner i’m sure she’s irritated that they get to skirt regulations, but you’ll have to search harder for your evidence of total hypocrisy.
