e10b: someone from the sanitation department is speaking about this at the Community Board 2 meeting tonight. The meeting is at 6:00 in the Pheonix Career Academy, 50 Jay Street (between Water and Plymouth Streets) in DUMBO. But don’t get too excited; from what I hear, nothing will be implemented until Fall at the earliest.
Aren’t churches and temples supposed to serve the community? If you want to do outreach, what better way than to become an active part of the community. And they should- religious organizations get tax breaks on their property. Shouldn’t they feel some obligation to give back something to the community?
there are plenty of religious organizations who would have welcomed the opportunity to show the community they cared, and even use the chance to do outreach. It just seems to me it was a very short-sighted approach.
Any news on the alt. side parking changes in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill? Isn’t the announcement supposed to be made today?
Nokilissa;
Perhaps in your dreams NYC is a socialist nation-state, walled off from that evil entity known as “America”. For most normal folks, including those who live in NYC, we have family dispersed throught the metro area and beyond. Tell me, genius, are folks from New Jersey supposed to take a cab to Bay Ridge?
There are pros and cons to a church having a parking lot (BTW: NYC law requires all new churches to provide a parking lot). How the congregants of each church choose to use their lot (if they have one) is their business. Stop being a busybody and calling people “a selfish minority” for exercising their basic right to use their property as they see fit.
Also, I’m wondering why the congregants of this church should take any advice from you, given your obvious contempt for them?

10:52, idiot,
I would like to point out that had YOU read my whole point, you might have seen that I suggested car services and cabs as well. Are you actually suggesting that most churches in the City have parking lots? How do you suppose all of those folks get to their weddings and funerals? Levitate?
Also, it was likely possible that something with the Greenmarket could have been worked out, whereby on the mornings or evenings of a scheduled wedding, the market would close up during those hours, or not open that day. Then you could still drive, as you seem to insist.
Not only is this America, it is also NYC, which has one of the best public transportation systems in the world, and in which many MANY of its citizens don’t even have a driver’s license. Bay Ridge’s vocal and seemingly selfish ‘minority’ is making this choice. To kill a great opportunity for the whole community.
10:52, so it sounds like many people will be dying to get into the Green Market!
Please please please put a green market in Crown Heights!!!!!! we’d love it! I know it would be really difficult logistically, but it would be so great to have one in Restoration Plaza (or maybe not so much if they can work out something with the underground parking lot)- would serve 2 neighborhoods. there are lots of churches here but I can’t think of more than one or 2 that have parking.
I can’t believe they passed up a win win situation. No church has weddings and funerals every Saturday and it would have been a great service to the entire community.Especially since so many supermarkets are closing or being torn down to make way for condos.
Nokilissa;
Yes, this is America, where private property is still respected. If you read the story, you would see that there were real factors to be considered – such as weddings and funerals. Should those who have such events at the church invite only those who can bike or walk.
Mind your own damn business. Live, and let live.
