“For the purists, there is really only one Brooklyn diner that serves, well, diner food. It’s out in East Flatbush, and it’s called the Paris Diner. ‘It’s been here since 1950,’ says owner Anthony Psaris, whose father first opened the diner (named ‘Paris’ because no one could pronounce ‘Psaris’) but went back and forth from numerous owners over the years. It was called Cappy’s, then Danny’s, then the Blue Bird Diner. It went belly up in 1999 before Anthony took it over again, and set to restore it. ‘I felt I had to bring it back to its former glory, if you will,’ says Psaris.”

“According to Mitch Spitz of Brooklyn’s gourmet produce store the Orchard, cara cara oranges in particular ‘were not affected that badly’ by the big West Coast freeze. And although prices have increased, the supply around town is good. In this recipe, Franny’s Andrew Feinberg combines the sweet, reddish-fleshed fruit with roasted beets. [NY Mag]

“Unfortunately, things were in the usual first day disarray when we went on opening night, which was equally annoying (they didn’t know how properly pop the cork) and hilarious (they filled the enormous red wine glass to the tip-top). The food looked good, but it lacked focus. The long menu wandered through nearly every country in the Mediterranean from Turkey to Morocco, and there weren’t that many wines by the glass. But things have changed in the past month, both for the neighborhood and the bar.”

Chip Shop

“A popular neighborhood joint that draws many faraway visitors partly thanks to favorable mentions in several travel guidebooks, ChipShop had for five years been a dual operation with signs also labeling it as the Curry Shop. The staff until recently dished out traditional fish and chips along with English-style Indian dishes, but Sell is dropping the curry.”
