And the answer to the question, “Will we get a Union Market for Christmas?” is a resounding “Yes!” The signage for the Cobble Hill outpost of the Park Slope-based gourmet market went up yesterday and the store opens today. If you happen to pop your head into the newly renovated 4,000-square-foot space (which is in the running for a LEED Gold rating) this morning please send us a photo! I guess this covers the over-priced gourmet niche that Trader Joes, Gourmet Fresh, the Italian market next to Gourmet Fresh, and Met can’t cover.
I think they’ll do jut fine. The one in South Slope always seems to be packed.
What tybur said – 27k a month is nothing. I can’t go into these fifi type markets and get out of there for less than 80 bucks (typically just buying milk, bread, eggs)
This area is starving for a decent grocery store (pun intended). Doomsayers will be eating words.
$27,000 per month plus taxes, utilities, insurance, etc. That shouldn’t be a problem. They just have to sell a bushel of tomatoes, 5 bags of chips, and 8 jars of capers and they should cover their nut… with cash to spare.
Sorry for the doom and gloom right before the holidays, but I give these guys 2 years until this space goes back to the market as a vacancy. According to Massey Knakal’s short-lived listing of the property, Union Market is paying $315,000 per year.
