Turning Chicken Shit into Chicken Salad
Having recently redone our own yard, we can appreciate what went into turning around this yard in Clinton Hill. “My contractor basically took chicken shit and turned it into chicken salad!” The result is above. To see what the yard looked like before, click on the jump.

Hal’s right about trees on private property. Well done for keeping it (don’t know why one would even consider getting rid of it). Great privacy too, in the summer anyway, for the back side of your house.
I would vote to keep the tree. For my taste, I would have kept the back of the yard a bit more naturalistic, rather than try to work around it.
It is illegal to damage or kill, intentionally or unintentionally, any street or park tree. Does not apply to trees on private property.
I can imagine why it would be illegal to remove a street tree (on city property), but in your own backyard? Really? What is your basis for claiming that?
I believe that anon 12:28 has expanded the law. It is illegal to cut down a street tree. However, cutting down a tree on private property is just an inexcusable shame.
It is illegal to remove a tree in NYC. You can actually get a hefty fine. You can remove plants but not trees.
I am pretty sure the 15k and the contractor name is a joke. See complain about said contractor in forum section.
All I can say is … WOW!
To who asked “why keep the tree?”–that’s a “dumb” question to ask for those who live in nyc. Mature, old trees are a rarity in the city and ones that are on your property, should stay. They eliminate pollution, allow shade, and add a cool touch of nature in an otherwise concrete city. Keep the tree man!
$15,000 is not a bad price, I am assuming that this price includes all the materials.
