Having recently redone our own yard, we can appreciate what went into turning around this yard in Clinton Hill. “My contractor basically took chicken shit and turned it into chicken salad!” The result is above. To see what the yard looked like before, click on the jump.

  1. It is posible to buy FSC certified ipe. Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a non-profit organization devoted to encouraging the responsible management of the world’s forests. It is generally recogmized as a “Green” approach. We bought it for our ipe deck in Crown Heights. The premium was about 10% more for the material. It comes in more limited sizes, and delivery time can take a while, depending on when the next shipment comes in, but all in all we felt pretty good about it.

  2. Funny how incredulous everyone seems to be about the thought of cutting down that tree, but nobody has considered the trees that somebody had to cut down to build the deck. The deck is built out of Ipe. The trees being cutdown to build all our fancy decks in Brooklyn is doing a whole lot more damage to the world than cutting down the tree in that back yard.

  3. paving over the backyard is not a bad idea. it prevents the urge plant vegetable gardens. nothing wrong with that if you know the full history of the property. but if you don’t, you could end up planting in soil contaminated with oil, lead (smelters), heavy metals, and a variety of chemicals/toxins. it’s best to use pots to plant your veggies.
hard to find a critic of this backyard though; wish it were mine.

  4. nice work. if $15K is a true cost, that’s not bad. cutting down a tree of that size would not only be a shame, but very expensive (it cost me about $300 to cut down a smallish invasive maple that was too close to my foundation).

glad the tree was kept and a creative solution was found to incorporate it into the plan.

beautiful backyard. kudos. just in time for winter…

  5. gorgeous. I would personally prefer a bit more ‘growing room’ and less slate. But still, beauty.

I’d be excited about the potential for grapevines or whatnot to cover the deck. Sexi and tasti.
