  1. The New American Academy sounds something like the school Auntie Mame’s nephew attended … only a hell of a lot noisier and a lot more crowded. Pretty much anyone who’s been in the elementary school trenches knows that young kids are highly distractible. Since Joel Klein knew less than nothing about teaching, it’s understandable that he would have endorsed this experiment. After all, they seem to be experimenting on “ghetto” kids and we know there is an inexhaustible supply of them.

  2. Presumably Wal-Mart wants to either (a) seek zoning variances or (b) some other benefit (like tax reductions) in connection with the placement of the store, and thus needs city approval.

  3. I don’t fully understand the Walmart story. I haven’t been following it from day 1. But seems like a mess.
From what I’ve gathered they want to open a store in NYC. Some are opposed to it and are fighting it. Am I right?
How can a retail establishment that is legally allowed to operate in the US be stopped from opening a store in a specific location? I’m confused.

  4. I have little faith in that New American Academy experiment. Maybe I’m shortsighted, but I just can’t see how it will work.
