A reader tipped us off to a vegan restaurant called Toad Style opening at 93 Ralph Avenue in East Bed Stuy. He said:

“They have an awning up, and appear to be doing work inside, but not sure when they’re going to open. I’m just happy there are finally more restaurants opening up this year on this end of the Stuy.”

When we stopped by to snap a few photos this morning, the gate was down. An almond cheese roll, grilled corn, and cashew ravioli are a few of the menu items they’re working on, according to a few Instagram photos.

Champs Vegan Bakery is nearby in Bushwick, but this is the first vegan restaurant we’ve heard of in Bed Stuy.

  1. Hopefully, they have a better ambiance than the bakery across the street. At one point, they advertised vegan baked goods, but have since changed that top-billing as no one comes in for vegan baked goods! I’m just dubious if there are enough customers in Bed-Stuy (especially Eastern District) who would want vegan fare. Have the restauranteurs done their research or are they under the impression that everyone would want vegan food?

(I’m also glad that I didn’t take the apartment on the second floor)

  2. I’m not particularly Vegan, but rather pleased to see some restaurants and things opening up in this part of Culinary No-Man’s-Land, where food is mostly Chinese takeout and fast food. I’ll eat vegan just to support the business.
