  1. infinitejester- Not that I don’t think the training police are given couldn’t be improved- I do. But she lunged at them and had already injured one in the hand and chest. I do remember the Eleanor Bumpers case (and the others as well)- I wonder if there will ever be a way to do this better? Cops are trained to react quickly and always be on the defensive. And they are often in situations where there is no time to assess or think.

On the other hand there must be thousands of cases where they have disarmed people successfully and without injury to anyone. We just don’t hear about them.

  2. Cops, believe it or not, are about saving lives, not taking them. Whether or not this woman was trying to commit suicide, she lunged at them and got one in the hand and the chest before they shot her. Cops are traumatized by shooting someone, especially if that person dies. That’s why they have such a high rate of alcoholism, burnout and suicide. My former employer worked with traumatized police officers- their lives are much more difficult than the general public thinks. Sure there are bad cops, but the majority of them are great people trying to do the toughest job in the city.

  3. DIBS and Heather, cops are trained to shoot for the torso, which presents the largest target. As recent history shows, cops under stress are not the best shots to begin with. To ask them to hit a moving leg is pretty tough. The point of shooting is not to kill, but to ‘stop’ the perp from continuing his life-threatening activities. Unfortunately a bullet to the torso, especially using the high velocity ammo cops use, can result in death.

Not justifying this shooting, just sayin…
