“art is what you get away with” – warhol.
that is ALL
it’s art.
he got away with it. got away with it in bushwick. could he get away with it in on the UWS? no. but then again is there ANY art these days coming out of the UWS or manhattan for that matter? no.
*rob*
For it to be universally recognized, needs fewer bottles and more random pieces of rags/dirty plaid shirts.

An excellent observation.
Alrighty then, I’m off to enjoy the art of my favorite mixologist. 😉
A HOMELESS PERSON’S SHOPPING CART is a “New York-centric, universally-recognized” symbol?? Good lord. OK, I think I just need to get off this thread.
And another thing – would this wonderful “artwork” be displayed somewhere around Sutton Place or the Upper West Side or at the intersection of Park and 77th? Hell no! Only in a “fringe” Brooklyn neighborhood (were we already see PLENTY of the genuine article) would someone even dare to put this thing up and pass it off as “art.”
A lot of contemporary art is this type of winking, “irreverent” usage of lowbrow content or images, with the artist getting a thrill over getting away with brining something like that into the Academy.
That being said, depicting a New York-centric, universally-recognized symbol in bronze within the city limits is most definitely art.
I’ll agree that there is little that is inspiring, enlightening, or even interesting about this piece.
Now, if you want to see real ART:
