This Week: Ultra-Modern in the Country
Upstate New York isn’t all rustic farmhouses and renovated Victorians. Sometimes we need a little break from the old in order to appreciate the new. In that spirit, we found some great Modern abodes out here in the sticks, each one featuring stunning views of the landscape that we so dearly love.

Built just last year, 36 Summers Lane in Woodstock is the studio of Robert Angeloch, artist and co-owner of the Woodstock School of Art. Situated on two acres in Upper Byrdcliffe, it couldn’t be in a better spot for viewing the pristine Woodstock Valley, and yet it’s less than two miles from the village of Woodstock. The house has three bedrooms, two baths, 1500 square feet and is energy efficient (outfitted with passive solar gain, amongst other goodies). Distance from Brooklyn: 2 hrs, 14 mins. Taxes: $12,144

Although we’re not nuts about the stucco exterior, we love the wall-to-wall windows, the tall fireplace, the curvy kitchen, and, of course, its location on five acres overlooking the Indian Creek Valley in East Chatham, Columbia County. It was built in 2004 and has three bedrooms, 1.5 baths (and a three-quarters bath?), 3,000 square feet and passive solar. Distance from Brooklyn: 2hrs, 49 mins. Taxes: $9,948.

Big Indian is a tiny hamlet located in the town of Shandaken, Ulster County. What it lacks in nightlife it makes up for in the gorgeous mountain scenery of Catskill Park. This Modern home attempts to bring the feel of the surrounding forest inside with timber accents, and it mostly works. Includes four bedrooms, 4.5 baths, 3464 square feet and five acres of land. Distance from Brooklyn: 2 hrs, 35 mins. Taxes: $13,246
