Last week’s Daily News article about the convicted sex offender found naked and self-mutilated in Fort Greene made us realize that we didn’t have a clue about how many registered sex offenders were living in our midst, so we headed over to the State Division of Criminal Justice Services website that makes such information public. We learned that our home zip code of 11238, which includes Fort Greene, Clinton Hill and parts of Prospect Heights and Crown Heights had 18 registered sex offenders—and that one of them, a child molester, lives just a block away from us. That’s nothing compared to the 90-odd men registered in Bed Stuy’s zip code of 11216 though. By comparison, Brooklyn Heights and Dumbo appear to be sex offender-free. Not surprisingly, many of the offenders are required to attend drug treatment as one of the terms of their parole. Luckily for them, Clinton Hill, Bed Stuy and Crown Heights also have more than their fair share of those too—unless a new clinic has popped up on Remsen or Pierrepont recently and we didn’t get the memo.

  1. The Who: the average Jewish mail is barely observant, let alone Hasidic. The scandals in the Hasidic and Lubovich communities are a whole can of worms but they don’t say a thing about “most Jewish males”

I know two people on that registry, one was 18 when he had sex with a 14 year old and plead guilty to statutory rape. Threat to society? I’m not convinced.

The other is a more complex story, and I haven’t made it my business to assess guilt or innocence but he took a plea bargain because he didn’t have a good lawyer. Despite what makes news, most child molesters are related to their victims. Wealthy offenders get a good lawyer and enough expert witnesses to inspire doubt. Offenders who can’t afford a lawyer take a plea bargain that includes the registry.

So the registry says more about who can afford slick lawyers than anything else.

  2. sixyearsandcounting:
It means exactly what it states: that sex crimes commited by jewish males are for the most part ommitted from NY state public sex offender stats and reports..almost all of them serve no time for sexual violations upon another person…..Go to the brooklyn D.A.’s website for more info on sex crimes for this population.

Sexual predators was not – has not and is not a dominating issue for us long time residents of Fort Green; but for some reason the paranoia seems to be catching “afire” I believe the paranoia is totally related to something else.
    Btw,
Does anyone know the outcome of the report of a woman who was raped near Brooklyn Hospital behind garbage cans?

  3. Actually, Brownstoner, 175 Remsen Street has a bunch of substance-abuse treatment programs: Bridge Back to Life, Realization Center, Brooklyn TASC, etc. Many of these serve a criminal justice population mandated by parole and probation to get treatment. That area has a high concentration of therapists, some of whom treat sex offenders.

  4. I hear you; I was quoting what was announced in public by a city official. She could be wrong, or have additional information. My real point–not unlike comments made back when about the federal probation office downtown–is that people move around.

  5. havelc is 100% correct. The rape stats for NYC fall far below the national average. Much lower than cities like Portland and Atlanta. NYC is generally a very safe city making the top 20 safest this calendar year. Looking at crime witihin a particular precinct which may cross several zip codes has been an effective crime management tool. However, where people reside and where they commit crimes are not always one and the same particularly in NYC. Rapists have metrocards too.

  6. doesn’t matter where they live. It is where they pray – I mean prey.
I have some strong reservations about this registry and mapping thing – because of many cases I’ve read where people who have done minor things get labeled and grouped with people that could be trouble. (say someone at 18 had fling very consensual with very experienced 15 year old).
