Monte’s, which billed itself as Brooklyn’s oldest Italian restaurant, shuttered in 2008, but something is afoot at the space it operated out of on Carroll Street near 3rd Avenue. About a month ago, we read on PMFA that some action had been spotted at the old restaurant, which still hasn’t lost its signage. Back then, there were no permits to confirm. But a recent stroll by confirms that a restaurant will definitely be coming to 451 Carroll. This permit came in at the end of January to renovate the existing eating establishment. And a liquor license for “Dominick’s of Carroll Street” was posted on the window. Attempts to reach the restaurant owner were unsuccessful, but we’d guess this is a new owner coming in rather than a re-opening of the old Monte’s. GMAP

  1. I can’t wait for this place to open ..bring some life to the block . Tired of all the little bars around here we need a nice family owned restaurant I pass bye every day and see these guys workin what a great job they are doing … And I got a sneak peek still has the original bar … Classic …..

  2. I’m pretty sure scenes from Married to the Mob, and Prizzi’s Honor were filmed there.

I live down the street, so it’s nice to see some life at the Monte’s location.

My 2¢… I love this area of Gowanus. I’ve been here for 6 years and know everyone in our building, share wifi, have made friends with a lot of the people that grew up in the neighborhood. We have a nice community.

  3. “I’m not sure how that’s possible because many posters on Brownstoner said Gowanus was nothing but a superfund site…”

Well I for one am thoroughly disappointed that we’re already 4 comments into this post and no one has claimed that it’s disgusting to have a restaurant that close to the canal. Someone had dropped the ball.

  4. boy, i hope they keep those old red booths.

does anyone remember what movies/t-v shows shot scenes there? i know about one episode of ‘law & order’ (during the jerry orbach era)..was there anything else?

  5. “but apparently a lot of people who actually do more than mouth off on a blog are doing a nice job of bringing a neglected neighborhood back to life little by little. ”

wait – you mean people on blogs mouth off about neighborhoods they have little knowledge about except what they read about on the internet? Shocking!!!!

  6. Every week there is a new bar, restaurant or other new business moving into Gowanus. I’m not sure how that’s possible because many posters on Brownstoner said Gowanus was nothing but a superfund site, but apparently a lot of people who actually do more than mouth off on a blog are doing a nice job of bringing a neglected neighborhood back to life little by little.
