The High Cost of Parking in The Heights
This is related to this morning’s curb cut discussion…We know that property in Brooklyn Heights is some of the highest priced in the borough. It’s also the hardest place to park, so it’s not surprising that parking places themselves don’t come cheap. For those keeping score at home, a parking spot at 60 State Street…

This is related to this morning’s curb cut discussion…We know that property in Brooklyn Heights is some of the highest priced in the borough. It’s also the hardest place to park, so it’s not surprising that parking places themselves don’t come cheap. For those keeping score at home, a parking spot at 60 State Street closed earlier this month for the eyebrow-raising price of $110,000. By comparison, a spot at a new condo development on Williamsburg’s Northside just went for $50,912. At this rate, maybe we need to consider a ‘Parking Spot of the Day’ feature.
Oh, the joys of not owning a car!
I also register my vehicle in Mass (yes at mom’s) but I live in Brooklyn. I pay to park my car off the street in a private garage. Frankly, my Mass. insurance AND the garage combined costs less per month than NY insurance alone. Also let it be said that I had an at-fault accident last December claimed, yes, in Brooklyn and my insurance rate went up but still not enough to surpass the OUTRAGEOUS new york state premiums. A 6-month policy in NYC is the same price as 12-month in Mass. Fugggetttabouthatttt!
BOD pretty much summed it up. Unless you’re making lots of claims, if you get into an accident in the city but your car is registered upstate or somewhere else, they won’t bother to investigate where your car mainly is. They’re going to raise your rates no matter where the accident happens anyway.
As far as why you’d want a garage. Most likely to reduce the damage the car would get from parallel parking and the outside elements. To some people that’s worth 50k.
It’s more in Brooklyn than it is in Manhattan, ishtar.
It doesn’t cost THAT much to insure you car in Park Slope or Brooklyn Heights. Trying insuring your car in Crown Heights. You’ll pay more for your insurance than your car note.
DIBS, if you were more environmentally responsible you’d bike to your second home in MA.
My license is based in MA, where I have a house. My car is also registered & insured there but I keep it in PA most of the time.
If you have a major accident where there is loss of life, there will be an investigation.
Otherwise, it’s like BoD says. You are allowed to drive around the country and to your second home!!!
fuggegaboudit – Unless you have a really poor driving record with lots of claims they aren’t going to investigate you for fraud. If your mailing address is Bklyn hts and your insurance bill is sent to bklyn hts, your insurance company KNOWS your vehicle will be in bklyn hts “on occasion” and that’s the risk they take also.
Car owners are allowed to drive around this country wherever the eff they want, and Poughkeepsie is right up the road.
Those people with plates from far flung locations like Florida or California are the ones who need to be the most careful.
why would you pay $50K to park off Kent Ave.? Its not hard to park there. And unless you’ve got a honda civic or something totally top of the range (Aston Martin) no-one is gonna steal your car.
