StreetLevel: South, New 5th Avenue Bar, Opens
South, the new bar in the former Vin Rouge space on 5th Avenue between 17th and 18th streets, has opened. According to BlackBook, South is run by the same people who own the Brooklyn Ice House in Red Hook and has half a dozen beers on tap. StreetLevel: New South Slope Bar on Tap [Brownstoner]…

Nice job killing discussion on this spot down the block from me. I was curious to hear what the buzz would be, but you hijacked another post, so I guess not.
LOL!
that was fun at the lesbo bar last week snappy 🙂 and i even behaved myself!! it was such a different atmosphere than nasty cattyshack which always smelled like feet and sweat.

The bar scene is great over here Rob. Won’t be as much fun as we had at the lesbo bar, but fun nonetheless 🙂 South seems like it will last longer than Vin Rouge for the simple fact that the folks in this nabe and those willing to walk over here aren’t so much into sitting at a place that caters mainly to the wine and cheese crowd. I’ve also taken note that the drinkers I’ve seen so far in South are decidedly beer lovers like myself. The main question will be whether they can sustain themselves with Ellis right next door. But like I said, I think South will get the older, quieter drinkers while Ellis will continue to pull the younger crowd. Ellis’ Thursday night karaoke has been quite loud lately so that may help to push more people to South.
how is the bar scene down there? im just curious because there seem to be sooo many bars opening up all over in this economy, just wondering how many bars a neighborhood can sustain and for the bars to do well? drinking never seems to cease in a bad economy tho i guess so maybe it’s one of the few viable businesses that can open?
still waiting for someone to open up a cheap 40 ounce bar! even if they charged 5 bux for a 40 ounce, that would be great!! regular beer bottles are too tiny they need to supersize that sh*t

And, incidentally, the sushi place next door to South is currently running a special of 19.95 per person all you can eat. I don’t eat sushi so I can’t say if they are any good or not. But, if anyone is desiring sushi and wants to be cheap about it, you may wanna check that out.
I tried Little Buddy’s roasted red pepper feta muffins…not too great for me, but loved the peanut butter cookie! Been meaning to stop into south. they redid the space a bit (added booths, did something out back in the small outdoor space). The past few nights they’ve had quite a few customers in there. They will probably wind up catering to the folks who feel a bit too old for Ellis or just want something a smidge quieter.
The bakery with the blue sign (Little Buddy Biscuit Company) in the background is heaven on earth. Roasted red pepper and feta muffins!
Actually picked up a ton of stuff there once for a dinner party and it was all outrageously delicious.
