The 5th Avenue retail gods sometimes taketh away, but they sure as hell giveth a whole lot. Coming soon: Video Free Brooklyn, the Smith Street video rental store, is opening in the former Romp storefront near Douglass. Sure, the big Hollywood further up 5th just closed down, but it seems like smaller rental stores with interesting stock (we’re thinking of Get Reel in particular) do decent business. Video Free Brooklyn II should open within a couple of weeks. Farther south down the avenue, meanwhile, another sequel is on the way: Pink Olive, the East Village baby/gift boutique, is coming to the former Posey Baker space near Lincoln. 5th Avenue’s newest addition will officially open its doors this Saturday. 1. Its amazing how 5th ave is changing every day. Every 6 months a whole slew of cool stores open up. The constant change is very exciting. I remember the early 90’s where you would see bodegas on every block. The difference between 5th and 7th was like day and night. The only change for the worst that I have seen on 5th avenue is the parking. Used to be able to find parking with little effort. Now I have to drive around for 30 minutes. Additionaly 5th avenue seems so much more alive now. Lots of young people walking around and hanging out. My sister who lives in soho came for a visit recently and stated that 7th seems like the “family block”, full of mom’s and 5th is the young singles exciting block. She would have chosen to live on 5th over 7th.

  2. All of you Slopers are so pathetic. You are always taking the hand me downs of the Carroll Gardens / Cobble Hill area. Nothing original or interesting ever happens in Park Slope. CG rocks!!!

  3. Isn;t there already another video rental place ion that end of Fifth?

Why not just set your money on fire? Makes about as much sense as opening a video store in a high rent space.

What next? A typewriter repair store?
