The 5th Avenue retail gods sometimes taketh away, but they sure as hell giveth a whole lot. Coming soon: Video Free Brooklyn, the Smith Street video rental store, is opening in the former Romp storefront near Douglass. Sure, the big Hollywood further up 5th just closed down, but it seems like smaller rental stores with interesting stock (we’re thinking of Get Reel in particular) do decent business. Video Free Brooklyn II should open within a couple of weeks. Farther south down the avenue, meanwhile, another sequel is on the way: Pink Olive, the East Village baby/gift boutique, is coming to the former Posey Baker space near Lincoln. 5th Avenue’s newest addition will officially open its doors this Saturday. 1. Video Free Brooklyn opened earlier this week. Space still looks a little empty but what movies they do have are pretty good titles. Can’t wait to watch There Will Be Blood. Gotta love the depressing Oscar movies.

  2. 10:02am:

    Not strange at all.

Smith and 5th are two different worlds for most shoppers.

5th is close to the western border of PSlope and most shoppers there come from 8th Ave, 7th Ave, 6th Ave, etc.

The walk from 8th Ave to Smith Street is faaaaaaaaar and crossing the GowANUS is gross and uphill on the way back.

  3. this new yogo monster place on 7th and berkeley looks amazing.

yogurt, coffee and waffles it says.

the decors is very un-park slope like.

    more like east village.

super cute. says opening march 2008 so any day now.

  4. i love park slope too, but i wouldn’t want to live ON 5th OR 7th.

that’s like saying you live in soho and would rather live on broadway than west broadway.

both are nightmares and the sidestreets are more pleasant.

it’s park slope. this isn’t east vs. west or 5th vs. 7th. you can live anywhere in the neighborhood and be a 5 minute walk to either avenue.

some like the quiet up near to the park and ome like being near the action.

i’m young and single and much prefer being 10 steps away from the park and walk down to 5th nearly every night for dinner/drinking etc.
