The latest doings on 5th Avenue include the long-awaited opening of Brooklyn Bread on 6th Street. The new outpost of the Court Street bakery is bigger than the Carroll Gardens location, and its employees say all goods are baked on the premises. Farther south north, near the corner of Sackett, a lingerie and handbag store called Petticoat Lane recently set up shop. The store is a small chain with other locations in Tribeca, Westchester and Connecticut. Near the corner of Union, meanwhile, a laundromat that’s had a sign up announcing its arrival for quite some time is finally almost ready to roll. New washing machines have been delivered, say workers, and the laundromat’s owner is looking to open within the next month.
As for this being a plain old midtown lunch spot, would anyone be willing to trade it for Subway, Chipotle, the Spicy Pickle, et.al. on Montague? I didn’t think so. Darn, I tried…
used to love la taqueria, until a few years back they drastically changed their margarita recipe for the worse. the food is still pretty good though. their south slope satellite, rachel’s, has a much better atmosphere, but now that the old place got a renovation, according to 3:06, maybe the joint has some fun left in her after all…
I predict Brooklyn Bread will do just fine. Plenty of folks work in the neighborhood and need a “midtown lunch spot.”
North Slope already has lingerie–there’s a place on 5th Ave and St John’s (?).
Curious: what’s the Mason Dixon Line of Park Slope? 9th Street?
Considering how much they’ve spent (both time and money) on the renovation, I have a feeling they are there to stay.
I was in there the other day and it was packed. I stoped in last night on my way home from the gym and thoroughly enjoyed the loaf of french bread I bought.
It’s kindof like a nice version of Europan in Manhattan. Something this neighborhood desperately needs…
I think they’ll be quite successful.
I just went to Brooklyn Bread last night, and although the staff is friendly – they seem kind of clueless. Especially about their bread.
There is really nowhere in the neighborhood to get freshly baked bread. I was hopeful about this place, but it is really more like a midtown lunch spot. It is primarily sandwiches, pastries, and coffee. Just a few different kinds of bread, and the staff doesn’t even know what they sell.
I got a loaf of sourdough bread that was somewhat undercooked, not very sour, and more similar to pizza dough.
I predict the place won’t last – especially with the rent a corner unit like that likely commands.
you should do an article on the newly renovated la taqueria at 7th and berkeley.
super nice and upscale renovation with a really beautiful bar with 100 different types of tequila.
those of us nearby are thrilled to have a new bar in the area…
you should go check it out and post some pictures…
More panties in the North Slope. I can die happy now.
Mr. B:
Do you need someone to be your Park Slope writer? Possibly someone who knows something about Park Slope…? I’d be more than happy and even know north from south!
