The latest doings on 5th Avenue include the long-awaited opening of Brooklyn Bread on 6th Street. The new outpost of the Court Street bakery is bigger than the Carroll Gardens location, and its employees say all goods are baked on the premises. Farther south north, near the corner of Sackett, a lingerie and handbag store called Petticoat Lane recently set up shop. The store is a small chain with other locations in Tribeca, Westchester and Connecticut. Near the corner of Union, meanwhile, a laundromat that’s had a sign up announcing its arrival for quite some time is finally almost ready to roll. New washing machines have been delivered, say workers, and the laundromat’s owner is looking to open within the next month.

  1. I think that Laundromat sign was up when I moved into the hood in 1994. When the only restaurant was the sports bar next door. Oh that and the horrible Aunt Suzies. By the way Aunt Suzies I never did thank you for the food poisoning you gave my girlfriend back in 1994. thanks.

  2. I don’t know about that 5:02.

I usually consider “North Slope” basically the named streets, anything south of that center slope and anything south of 9th Street, south Slope.

I’m sure it’s all up to interpretation, but I definitely don’t consider anything north of 9th, “north” slope.

Back in the day, Park Slope in its entirety only went to 9th Street.

Funny, I thought it was exactly like Europa too, sans the salad bar. I also don’t think it’s something the neighborhood needs or wants – but we’ll see who is right in a few months!

Park Slope has been littered with failed retail operations for years, many of which spent a lot of money. Anyone remember Grace Under Fire on 7th Avenue?

Still though – why call it Brooklyn Bread when you only sell maybe 30-40 loaves of bread? No multigrain bread? It just seems damn odd to me.

  4. Well it only took 5years or so for the Laundry – but no worries they will open just in time for the gentrification/new condos in the area to be complete and there biz should be great – I mean just because every new building/conversion has laundry in the apartments or in the building doesnt mean a laundromat wont succeed….does it??
