Atlantic Avenue is about to get another stylish feather in its cap: Clothing design boutique Dangerous Mathematicians is pulling the plug on its Lower East Side store and setting up shop at 394 Atlantic Avenue in Boerum Hill. At the new location, the company will continue to offer “affordable custom-designed clothing.” There’s an opening party scheduled for the night of February 26th. GMAP

  1. Montrose, I really do not disagree with that. But I just got back from Havemeyer street, which USED to have a meat store, a fish store, a hardware store, a few clothing shops, a corset store, a fruit stand and a variety of other businesses that had been there for oh, say about at least thirty years or so and now has… some vacant storefronts and gutted buildings, as well as an assortment of stores selling vintage clothing that might as well be from Dompsey’s (were it still around) except that they all cost $200. And seeing that always makes me cranky.

  2. Rob’s attitude, I’m frightened to admit, I understand, but Benson, you’ve really been drinking the bitter grounds from the bottom of the cup lately. You poo poo preservationists for wanting to preserve our brownstone neighborhoods, you are the only person shouting to tear down old churches, you have nothing but contempt for a coffe house in Bed Stuy, and now scorn for the opening of a new boutique. Is there anything you do like, besides starting World War III with Iran?

As far as the boutique goes, if someone is putting their hard earned money into creating a new business, or even moving an old one, they are creating jobs in Brooklyn, whether temp jobs for construction and interior work, or more permanent sales jobs. They will be paying taxes, wages, and providing a product or service that some will find desireable, which is all any retail establishment does. If what they sell is not your cup of joe, then don’t darken their door. But they are providing the local deli with customers for THEIR joe, thereby aiding in keeping that business alive as well. Seems like a win/win to me.

Can one distinguish between a pre-breeder and post-breeder-operated boutique?

yep, i can. 100 dollar baby t-shirts with cutesy ironic phrases on them usually mean post-breeder boutique.
