At the beginning of August we noticed the space at 299 Smith Street, previously home to longtime barbershop Sal’s, would once again be a barbershop. We thought the old institution might make a comeback, but the signage our tipster spotted proves otherwise. The new hair spot will be called ‘Persons of Interest’ and something tells us it will be a little more chic than what was there before. Hipster barbers on Smith Street…sign of the times?

Butterfly – both are on Bayard St., one is called Brazil and the other Canton (I believe). They do great cuts, very meticulous and spend a bit of time.

Chinatown: $4 haircuts, and still use straightrazors and hot shaving cream. Plus they’re in underground mahjong parlors w/smoking allowed for added ambience.
