Not long after our hand-wringing over the number of empty storefronts on Flatbush Avenue, comes this exciting news: In late September Ricky’s will be opening up a pop-up costume shop in time for Halloween at the corner of Flatbush and Bergen. But the local chain store’s plans for the area are more than temporary: We’re told that in the early fall, they will be setting up a permanent location at 478 Bergen Street (pictured), right under the Pintchik sign. 1. That’s cool.

You gotta give it up to Pintchik for really making that strip of Bergen something special. It’s really quite cute (for lack of a better word) and one of the more interesting and eclectic small strips of retail I’ve seen anywhere in Brooklyn.

I walked up Flatbush from Bergen to Grand Army Plaza last night and there are actually very few empty storefronts. In fact, the spot next to the new Taro Sushi (former Dunkin Donuts) has had it’s for rent sign removed.

I was surprised how decent it was looking.

  2. or how about people who don’t live near real beauty supply shops and real porno stores?

*rob* please locate a beauty supply store or porno store within walking distance of PS. I’ll happily check it out.

  3. I love Ricky’s because I can always find quality products for my kinky curls. I can’t just pop into Duane Reade for products and most beauty supplies catering to blacks don’t carry the type of products I like (Carol’s Daughter, Jane Carter, Kinky Curly, etc.) and other beauty supplies don’t cater to natural black hair at all. 🙁

They also have great nail care products. I love Mr. Pumice! That cheap thing keeps my feet baby soft.

i do not understand the fascination with this chain

it’s just a combination beauty supply shop / sex toy shop that also happens to sell ironic birthday cards and stuff. it’s for people who are too intimidated to go into real beauty supply shops and real porno stores.

  5. I am thrilled that a Ricky’s is finally finding a permanent location in PS. I avoided the Halloween shop b/c stuff was always overpriced. But you can’t beat a Ricky’s for good cheap makeup, hair accessories and high-end blow dryers (salon level). They also sell all kinds of skin products. I just wonder why they aren’t taking the storefront right on the corner of Flatbush and Bergen, which has more foot traffic and were the Halloween pop-up is always located.

  6. i do not understand the fascination with this chain, and why they are everywhere, and how they stay in business outside the month of october.

but i was always amused there was one on montague street in brooklyn heights. not sure what their dildo selection is like there, though.

  7. hair dye and dildos are totally overpriced at ricki’s. it’s essentially a tourist mall store.

just go to real hair shops and real porn shops. the real porn district in brooklyn is on 3rd avenue in the 20’s. there’s a bunch of annoying yuppie hausfrau who were priced out of park slope who are trying to shut down those places, but it aint gonna happen.
