Although High Stakes Cheese Steaks bit the dust a few months ago and plenty of large storefronts nearby are sitting empty, there’s a cluster of new openings on or near this busy stretch Flatbush. On the corner of Dean and Flatbush, New York Chess and Game Shop recently opened. The store is advertising group classes for kids and adults, and it sells all manner of chess gear. A block away, on Bergen between Flatbush and 6th Ave., an Aveda salon is opening in the storefront of a rental building that was extensively renovated. Meanwhile, on the southwest corner of Flatbush and Bergen, the space next to Pintchik Hardware is once again transforming into a Halloween costume emporium c/o Ricky’s. Far as we know, Ricky’s will, like last year, only take over the storefront for the season.
tiptoe, there’s a Ricky’s on Montague Street by Hicks. Or does BH no longer count as Brooklyn? 🙂
I would be thrilled if Ricky’s opened a real store at this location. Why doesn’t he expand into Brooklyn? I mean, Ricky lives in BK, we have a need for this kind of store, it’s a win-win situation!
i disagree — that’s a valid point. Probably for the best that I never got the chance. 🙂
definitely were not as good as philly. sketchy in a place that gets a lot of traffic and a lot of turnover on the grill isn’t necessarily a bad sign. sketchy in a place that is flat empty on a saturday at lunchtime is a whole ‘nother story.
i ate there once. the cheese steaks were pretty mediocre.
Alas for High Stakes Cheese Steaks (or, as its sign made it look like: High Cheese Stakes Steaks). I never got a chance to try their food – was curious if it’d come anywhere near the cheese steaks I had while living in Philly, most of the best of which were made in equally sketchy-looking joints.
