There have been some rumors that Petco, the large chain pet store, was planning a move into the old ZuZu’s Petals place on 7th Avenue and Union, which was destroyed along with several other storefronts by a fire. Well, consider the rumor confirmed: We spoke to the owner of the building and he said that Petco will indeed be moving into the new commercial space, to be around 5,000 square feet. The storefronts first have to be demolished, and we have a picture of a rendering here.

I’m not sure they’ll allow that, qualmly.
Notice the thread today about the Barney’s co-op going in. They are having to go through Landmarks on anything related to the exterior including signage.
Let’s hope, anyway…
How can you provision a sophisticated New York City pet at Petco?
re: 11217, oh i totally get that the architect’s plans are approved.
but, there’s just really no way to class up this signage:

🙂
Just one store in the space? So Petco is going to carry the full cost of the building?… rent, taxes, water sewer, ect. ect. That’s gotta be a lot of squeaky toys.
Well qualmly, this is in the historic district, so luckily it must look like the rendering above.
And it’s already been approved.
somehow i’m guessing that if it’s a PetCo, it’s not going to end up looking quite as classy as the facade in the original rendering. sigh.
I’m thinking of getting a fish…
Same here, PS. I’d heard the rumor & am planning to continue going to my local purveyor. I do hope they put a crimp in the health-food-type place across from Key – they charge astronomical prices for typical brands, never mind the “organic” stuff.
Yes, this does not bode well for the other pet stores in the area. Saw it happen on the UWS when the Petco there opened. Within a year, the other pet stores were gone.
With that said, this space has been so ugly for so long that having something (anything) new and fresh in there will be an improvement.
The Ace Supermarket next door is currently undergoing a remodel as well.
