Yesterday morning Brooklyn Heights Blog had a post regarding an email sent out by Judy Stanton, the executive director of the Brooklyn Heights Association, about how there had been five daytime burglaries in the neighborhood in the previous four days, and all of them involved thieves entering unlocked houses. City Room picked up on the story and interviewed some residents of the neighborhood, where an officer was taping up hundreds of warning fliers yesterday. One person who’s lived in the area since 1984 said unlocked doors are common in the Heights: “You get used to a certain level of comfort and you don’t go back too easily. But I locked my door today.” Is America’s first suburb the only section of Brooklyn where unlocked doors are common?

“people have definitely made it up to my apartment without being announced. (mostly hipster delivery people from Dumont Burger)”
DH, I made it up to your apartment without being announced, but that’s only because I look like a hipster delivery guy.
My doormen usually sit at the desk sleeping. Even when they’re awake, they let most anyone in without stopping them or asking questions. That’s why I laughed heartily when the building owner touted the doorman as a great feature when we were negotiating a new lease.
Even with the doorman, I could see a person getting in and casually testing the doors on a floor to see if they were locked.
I don’t see someone going to my door in plain sight of 6 other units, and kicking it down.
lol cgar
“Doormen certainly know everyone who live in the building, even a large building, and if they don’t know you they will ask you who you are. No way a doorman will let a stranger in without getting an OK from the resident they are visiting. Do you really think their job is opening the door?”

DH, what’s worse for you is that you actually let PLUSAs in! Forget your neighbors, you never know what one of us might steal from YOU.

a doorman building with video cameras in the lobby and at the entry is the most secure place to live. Doormen certainly know everyone who live in the building, even a large building, and if they don’t know you they will ask you who you are. No way a doorman will let a stranger in without getting an OK from the resident they are visiting. Do you really think their job is opening the door?
So, will a homeowner’s insurance policy pay for a burglary claim if the owner didn’t lock the door?
(After all, the premium is based on what type of “security systems” you have… deadbolt, alarm, windows, etc.)
“I’m pretty sure any of them who buy weed or other drugs would be getting it home delivery…”
damn skippy – and i don’t escort them out – sorry neighbors!!
i kinda feel less secure in a big doorman bldg. there’s no way the doorman knows EVERYONE who lives there.
Even in a doorman building I’d probably deadbolt my door when i leave. You still have no idea who your neighbors are letting in. I’m pretty sure any of them who buy weed or other drugs would be getting it home delivery…
