rob, the myth of tax breaks for marriage should be put to bed once and for all, ESPECIALLY as it pertains to gay marriage!
The tax code was set up to benefit an old-school 1950s marriage where the man went to work and the woman stayed home with the kids. However today, especially in NYC, where typically both spouses work, the opposite is true. Consider the two-income marriage with both partners earning 75k each. Single, they would be in one tax bracket. Married with a joint income of 150k they are now in a higher tax bracket. In fact this is called the ‘marriage penalty’ and numerous allegedly conservative presidents from Reagan on have pledged to eliminate it, since it encourages shacking up not marrying. But it hasn’t happened, mainly since the lost revenue has to come from somewhere else.
I think it would be logical to assume that gay marriages will have fewer kids per marriage than straight marriages so therefore the marriage penalty will hit them even harder.
DIBS, I’ve been trying to think of a way to invest in this whole gay marriage thing. Doubling the pool of marriages should also double the number of divorces, but alas, I can’t think of any publicly traded law firms that do divorce! ANy ideas?
Biff….Thanks. there is another one that I am trying to locate that was a combination of songs which was awesome and I think it was in Berlin Central Station. Europeans are cool like that when it comes to these things. The only thing Improv Everywhere could pull in Grand Central Station is the “Freeze” for a few seconds together at the same time.
Snappy…I think it was google ads and not Mr. B’s want to advertise things like that. I am straight and all for same sex marriage. I think everything should suffer the institution of marriage equally!
Dave…its amazing how Roubini’s words are followed like God. He is one smart cookie though. There are a few people like him, when they say “Boo!”, the whole market jumps. That’s an amazing power. I would just use it to my advantage. Go out, say Microsoft is headed for disaster, wait for the stock to drop, then buy it up, come out half a year later, say ooopps they are doing great, stock jumps, then sell. Boy I would make loads of money.
DIBS, I pray it never retest the lows. if mkt pulls back that hard, it’s likely that the massive gov packages ($2+ Trillion) are not working out – that’s not a scenario even the Real estate bears here want to see cause that low will be cracked and we’ll be praying it holds at 5k. at 5k, suspect most of us are unemployed, broke,….
I’m actually not itching to go back into the mkt. am more focused on buying a house (at right price) and maybe buying a business. am monitoring the mkt to give me a read on where econ is, etc.
M4L…you’re lucky. Parking in my nabe is a pain…most times we park we park 10 blocks away.
On Sunday,we were on Atlantic Ave btwn Court and Clinton. We found a spot, hubby signaled and was waiting for traffic to pass before he backed it in. A car pulls up behind us and starts honking and honking. Hubby puts the car in park gets out and goes to the car.
The guy in the car tells Hubby that he’s blocking traffic and holding him up. Hubby says: Don’t you see me signalling I want to park. Go around me.
Hubby is so calm. I would have been calling the guy an idiot.
Are people that stupid that they don’t understand driving etiquitte? Or is it just people in Brooklyn Heights?
