We’d fall asleep in our PJ’s laying on the landing and my dad would carry us back into bed at the end of the night. We’d never get in trouble for that.
I’m loving that school thread – wish I actually had time to engage in that discussion while it was happening! Today a student turned in a research project claiming that FDR knew Pearl Harbor was coming. He meant to title his project “Pearl Harbor Undercover,” but instead typed “Pearl Harbor Under the Covers.”
Btw, I’m on a bus to DC now, one of those with wireless internet. It’s a nice experience in theory, and makes the time pass by more quickly. In reality it’s fairly awkward to be typing while trying to squeeze a laptop in the space behind the seat in front of you. Luckily I must appear fairly undesirable – I was the only person nobody sat next to, so I have both seats to myself.
THL, I have many of the same memories of gatherings in our home! My parents would always have people over on Saturday night and I would fall asleep listening to the sounds of their talking and laughter (they weren’t hip enough to be dancing to Musique or listening to disco or funk!). Then I would run downstairs the next day, being the fat kid I was, and gobble up all the leftover treats.
What, good memory! Sounds like you know your hip hop history; way more than I do. I believe the Sugarhill Gang paved the way for Grandmaster Flash’s “The Message” that was released (on Sugar Hill Records) in the early ’80s, which was far more serious and deep. Grandmaster Flash (and the Furious Five) were the first hip hop/rap artists inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They then paved the way for the likes of Public Enemy, NWA, etc.
“Oh I remember with Cindy Garvey 2nd week in September 1979.”- How on earth DO you remember that?”
With the Fatback Band “King Tim 3rd” and Sugarhill’s “Rappers Delight” was historic to underground Rap and Hip Hop! Growing up in Rap we never thought it would be pressed on to Vinyl or to see someone Rap on TV! Rap finally hit mainstream!! That was a hugh part of my life, it’s something I will never forget! I can tell you most of the details in my old days of Hip Hop!!

What I remember is my folks used to throw parties and late in the night when my sister and I were supposed to be asleep we’d lay at the top of the stairs watching the party goers dancing to all those classic disco and funk songs. The next day we’d try to do the dances and sing the songs using the vacuum cord as our microphone.
We’d sing THIS song by Musique and my mom would scream, “Stop singing that! That’s a grown up song!” We had no idea what her problem was. I just thought she was crazy. Now…yeah I get it.

That’s pretty awesome. Where does Casper’s Groovy Ghost Show fall into the mix? Was that the “official” first or was it King Tim 3rd?
