  1. “Ma Po Dou Fu” literally means “pock-marked old woman tofu”.

It’s a pretty spicy speciality of the szechuan province made with slippery beancurd, ground pork, chillies, and szechuan peppercorns.

  2. “Somehow I bet there’s an old Chinese lady on Hester Street that you can’t find on the internet.”

Somehow I beter there’s a young Chinese gentleman on Hester Street that DIBS found on the internet.

  3. THL, get your mind out of the gutter. It’s spicy bean curd, usually with ground pork; yhe latter which may be omitted this weak for our Jewish brethren unless of course the pork is on sale at half price 🙂

  4. most chinese take-out is loaded with msg and will make you feel really bad if you are sensitive to it.

Go to any of the major chinatown and pick a restaurant that’s full of asians. Look around the tables and point to any of the dishes that you like the look of and give it a go.

1.3 billion chinamen can’t all be wrong!

  5. “I need to master Ma Po Dou Fu.”

Dave- I know I could Google that to find out what it REALLY is but any time you say something like that I just assume it’s sexual in nature. LOL.

  6. hmm makes sense, i guess ive really only had the take-out kind. or maybe im allergic to something it (msg?) i almost always feel like ass right after i eat it. like i have the flu or something!

  7. Denton, Maybe try to ask around some of the big Asian markets on 8th Avenue like Hong Kong supermarket(@60th St). Or perhaps at your favorite restaurants.

Rob, the food served in Chinese homes is vastly different from that of the take out joints. They “Americanize” it to make it more palatable to us. It’s like calling a Big Mac a hamburger or Dominos pizza. They only barely resemble the real thing.
