Been there, lived that. Urgh, to say the least. Only in my case, we were the only blacks, so there was no one to compare us to except the mythical black people they had heard were out there looking to steal, etc.

That would work! I already have the floppy hat, and gallons of sunscreen.

I totally suck at volleyball, but used to love playing it at the beaches in California anyway.
My son seems to be completely color blind when it comes to race, which is both good and bad.
There have been a few times, usually in parks, when I have seen clear cases of him being left out/treated differently because of his race but he does not seem to understand.
He calls all of the kids in class his “friends,” and gets upset when some of his friends are mean or treat him differently.
BTW, he is 10 years old and until this year went to a school in Los Angeles that was probably 45% white, 35% Hispanic, 15% Asian/Middle Eastern, 5% black and had a lot higher median family income then where he is now.
dona, when were you living there? my brother and his college roommate moved to osaka in ’88 or ’89 and taught english at bilingual. the roommates older brother stayed for years and became vice president of the school. later he moved to nyc and formed a successful consulting business here that liaised for japanese companies doing business in the states. unfortunately he’s an arrogant asshole and I think he’s flushed the business down the toilet in the last couple years.
