  1. “I think living in Japan for any length of time is not good for many Americans, because they are so ….how to put this……free floating and free from structure and social support, they can indulge their immaturity and wierdness and the Japanese just will dismiss them as “hen na gaijin” weirdo foreigners. It is a nice way to develop into a misfit.”

HAI, WAKARU! that is SPOT ON!

all 3 of my siblings have taught there and experienced this… obviously the gender dynamics made it easier for my brother than it was for my sisters ; )

my best friend from high school spent 4.5 years there and had a very difficult time leaving. luckily he realized that if reached the 5 year mark he would probably never get out and never really do anything with his life. he still has a few friends there who are in perpetual reality disconnect.

  2. lol cobble! i understand. the screen that spider was crawling on in college met an untimely and terrible end (along with the spider) in that ‘incident.’ i’d hate to burn out your screens 🙂

There are a lot of ways to define rich. $$$$, no. but in the things that matter, I am definately rich.”

Wait, why else would you want to go to Japan during a bubble? Just to be a part of the action? Couldn’t you have found that here?

Nah, I made good money from Japan. Things change though and that “run” didn’t last forever.

  4. I had a wierd ephiphany in Japan (actually many) but I began to understand racism. I was always the GUEST OF HONOR. Very few people, including my friends, actually had the slightest clue about why I was there, what I thought about things, what motivated me. They were sweet and polite but I felt like I was acting out some image of what they imagined Americans to be and even was pursued for friendship by some people to get their international sophistication cred. Like I as a person was invisible.

  5. “cobble, in college we perfected killing spiders on screens using white rain hairspray and a lighter. want me to come over and demonstrate?”

YIKES! Uh, gee, uhm, thanks for the offer, Snaps, really! But, uh, uhm, you see, as it turns out, I prefer to live here as it is rather than a burned out shell!!
