dona, I sort of rejected the notion of moving there when I was younger just bc all of my sibs did it. I had studied the language a little in high school, but never pursued it in college. then after I quit my old finance job I started visiting my high school friend in tokyo. on one of those trips I met a french (half japanese) ex-pat and started this kind of whirlwind romance. we saw each other over the course of a year traveling back and forth, but each time we did one of us was essentially on vacation–it was amazing, but no reality checks. I very seriously considered moving there to give it a shot, but one or both of us would have been forced to drastically change our lives. ultimately, I stayed in new york and she went back to france to finish med school. c’est dommage, gomennasai…
I got flipped off by a girl on Wednesday cycling over the Pulaksi when I didn’t get out her way quick enough (the Slow + Yield to pedestrians sign was about 15ft away). It was very effective becuase she was cycling away, didn’t look back and the wind was whistling in her ears. I had no good comeback.
snappy, i get the whole “youre not really black” as well from people, but it’s actually mostly white people i get that from. on lots of other websites in my history of internet travels there have been many who were shocked i wasnt a teenage black girl.
Percweptions about white people I’ve picked up from various of my daughter’s friends from her school (she’s asian btw)
White people:
1) are rich
2) live in la-la land
3) don’t take the bus
4) don’t hit their kids
5) don’t have nick-nacks on their shelves (nick-nacks wasn’t the word used but I can’t remeber the actual one)

“Very few people, including my friends, actually had the slightest clue about why I was there, what I thought about things, what motivated meâ€
