i know exactly where im not liked and wanted and there’s a higher chance of getting a bat to my face.
Well, it’s not in Crown Heights or Bed Stuy. That is absolutely ridiculous. And since you refuse to come over here and actually walk the streets with your own two feet, I can’t see how anyone would take your word on the subject.
“I think the fact that just about everything in our culture is geared around “mainstream Christian culture” should tell anyone that it is alive and well. It is also large enough to accommodate other faiths and cultural mores as well.”
Well if benson is any example, it’s not doing that accomodating so well.
And on top of that, no one disparaged your father or his fellow servicemen. My father was also a World War II vet, yet he would not have been able to move to a nice suburban home on Long Island, paid for by the GI Bill. So while no one has ever said ALL of those men were not brave patriots, let’s not kid ourselves into thinking that when they came home, they were all accorded the same rewards for that service. That’s not their fault, but it’s the facts of life, none the less.

oh come on. that’s like saying crime can happen anywhere. of COURSE it can, but that’s not the reality. there ARE neighborhoods in NYC where being gay will give you a target on you back. that’s a fact! please, dont tell me what it’s like in my experience as a gay man. i know exactly where im not liked and wanted and there’s a higher chance of getting a bat to my face.
“Hence, my original comment about liberal white guilt. There is a notion on the left these days that all communities except one have cultural values that should be celebrated, and that community is mainstream white Christian culture. The easiest way to spot this is to note that a community that is – say – 95% hispanic will be called “diverse”, but never will a community that is 95% white be called so.”
Benson, you know as little about the “left” as you do about communities on Long Island. Why don’t you just back off and leave it alone. You are wrong. As for the celebration of “mainstream Christian culture”, well I think the fact that just about everything in our culture is geared around “mainstream Christian culture” should tell anyone that it is alive and well. It is also large enough to accommodate other faiths and cultural mores as well. Unless you happen to be one of those people who needs to be validated 24/7. And I have never seen anyone say that a community that was 95% Hispanic or black or Indian or Asian, or anything else, was diverse. At least stop making stuff up to support your rants.
You don’t want people to define you or your upbringing? Then don’t do it to others. I would think that if rf says Hicksville had few Jews in the early 60’s, and she grew up there, then she is more of an expert on the subject than you. The fact that Levittown and other similar developments practiced discriminatory policies towards African Americans shows that Long Island was not the paradise it’s made out to be. Jewish people may be a mainstream of many communities now, but that doesn’t mean they always were. And if she says so, then who are you to disagree?

Frankly rf was being facetious when she wrote “white trash”, and that term gets thrown around all the time on the OT- by a whole lot of people, and in a joking way.
yes, kinda like moonface. there’s definitely a double standard. ran into RF this weekend and met her daughter. cute kid! i grew up in an area that was 30% white trash, 69% hispanic trash and 1% asian. why do i not call the asians trash? cuz they weren’t. and yes, obviously, ther are outliers. there was a name for the indian thugs in high school, but im totally blanking on that right now. they were totally lolzy and wtf? hahahaha people have too many hang ups when it comes to race and class.
“A Jew feeling uncomfortable growing up on “Lon Guyland”?!?!?!?!?!?!? That’s got to be about the funniest thing I’ve read all week.”
Benson- what you know about growing up Jewish would fit on the head of a pin. Frankly rf was being facetious when she wrote “white trash”, and that term gets thrown around all the time on the OT- by a whole lot of people, and in a joking way. But this is you doing your “defend the aryan” thing. And why is it when someone talks about white folk, you ALWAYS have to make it about Black people or Hispanic people? In fact, one time we were on some topic or another that offended you (easy to do), and out of nowhere you made an offensive joke about President Obama being black. Then you fluffed off in a snit.
Red Hook? Let me tell you why Red Hook wasn’t worried about Blacks moving in- and I speak from PERSONAL FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE- my Black husband and I found a great apartment in Red Hook. Applied for it. Got a phone call several days later from the Italian landlord telling us we couldn’t have the apartment becuase the Puerto Ricans in Red Hook would be offended by us. Man was too stupid to even lie about it, because, hey- we were only a Black man and a Jewish woman. So take your high moral ground and stick it where the sun don’t shine.
I repeat, Benson, Hicksville had VERY FEW JEWS. This was in the 50s and 60s. Our temple was in Westbury, which had more. Please tell me more about my childhood!
I am not firing away about your being politically incorrect. I am firing away about your being wrong about where I grew up.
Do you think that every single community on Long Island had a substantial number of Jews? How wrong can you possibly be?
