I was gonna suggest Sheepshead Bay too.
There are a bunch of day trips or morning trips leaving from there daily.
They also have eco-watcher tours for whale and seal watching.
biff — as for Philly tourism, the champs might like the Eastern Penitentiary (really cool space, great audiotour by Steve Buscemi, kids love it) and a stop at the Magic Gardens on South Street (totally psycho psychedelic mosaic installation).

Also, the museum at Penn has one of the most extensive collections in the US of Egyptian mummies.

Biff, The Buddakhan in philly is also pretty awesome and family friendly.
There is a bunch of fishing boats that leave off sheepsheadbay for day trip or half day trip all summer long and you get to keep anything you catch.
