  1. That sounds lovely, donatella. I grew up not far from St. Phillips and James Catholic School and church. I used t go into the church and enjoy the beautiful interior. Every year they would put on a big neighborhood fair – some of the best times we ever had.

  2. “Ah liberals at work – trying to restrict speech.”

Yeah- we aren’t the ones who wanted to stop legislators from using the word “uterus” when discussing an anti-abortion bill.

    The Beaver- of course! 😉

  3. Bxgrl, last night I had a fabulous experience. I went to a mini-concert, held by a Bronx Catholic grammar school.
    No s#!t.

My friend grew up in the South Bronx, parents were from Ireland and he went to St. Josephs Grammar School which was predominately Irish American then. By chance, he found out about a silent auction/ kid’s concert fundraiser for his old school and we went. The demographic has changed, no longer Irish and Italian and no longer taught by nuns who basically taught for free. So, not so affluent families are sending kids to Catholic school (5,000 dollars per student per year) and families pay 3,000 dollars (demographic is 85% of kids come from one parent households) and the raise 2,000 per student by fundraisers. We were just blown away by these kids. They didn’t play so long — they were probably age 10-13, there were probably 100 kids, playing every instrument under the sun and playing everything!!

They do not exclude ANYONE (academics, emotional problems) and many of the kids are on full scholarship and these kids all go on to High School and have a 95% graduation rate from High School. (As opposed to norm of 57% in Public Schools)

Anyway, I totally fell in love with them. I was bs’ing with some of the girls (the boys were more shy) and all of them were so ambitious for their future (one wanted to go to Styvesant, others talking about music). Anyway, both my friend and I were floating going home.

    It was wonderful.

  4. “In fact, you do that far more than any of us liberals do.”

Yeah but I admit it and don’t have a problem with it.

I think stereotyping is one of the most important tools we have for thinking about the world.
