politicians keep focusing getting elected, relected and somewhere down the priority list is serving his/her constituents. when the opposing party fucks up and risks losing their gig, the other party rejoices. that’s what’s fucked up with politicians now. we the people dont find any joy when one or both parties mess up cause we’re paying the price. electing someone else doesnt change it. just another face/name doing the same bullshit
“I would say the same thing about The demosrtacs and the current level of spending and taxes. As they sit in Washington with their heads up their asses, housing starts, industril production and the dollar all falling.
More shellacking to come.”
Dave- I am talking about both parties. As for who is doing what, well there is more than enough blame to go around.
slopey- I’m much more pragmatic because I believe that the extreme partisanship we have today is destructive. I have no problem with pols campaigning and yes we do hold them accountable by our voting. However it is not a level playing field for those who want to run. Its a matter of money and who can spend the most. That’s another whole discussion these days.
When the majority of the country elects a President, that is the most important voice. Ignoring that voice – since we like to pride ourselves on our democratic process- means you don’t care about it. At some point elected officials should be both pragmatic enough and – if you will- patriotic enough to set aside partisanship. Setting aside partisanship is a far cry from setting aside principles.
M4L, I am not a big dark wood person, but there are certain colors that look fabulous with dark trim. Warm autumn tones, like muted ochre/orange looks great. But would probably NOT look good next to red. One look I really DONT like (and you see it all the time on brownstoner) is dark trim with white walls. Very stark and ugly.
the country is fucked up now. if huntsman doesnt think current candidates can fix the country and feels he’s the right person to do it, glad he stepped up to the plate. all this loyalty talks is bullshit. the loyalty he or any politician needs to adhere to is loyalty to the people of this country
Seriously speaking: this talk of “for the good of the country” is alot of hooey. I WANT a system where there are competing ideas out there. I WANT a system where the aim is to win an election. That is our system, and it has served us well. To hear folks talk about it, you would think we are some 3rd-rate nation.
If someone thinks that there was a more genteel time when wise men sat around and smoked pipes as they pondered the “good of the nation”, I suggest that you read the newspapers from the time of our founding. Back then they had less pretension about being non-partisan, and were less restrained with the presonal attacks.
I’m pretty clueless on the color stuff. I gave the contractor lots of liberty on the color for the crown heights pad and it ended up with a living room painted RED. The RED works albeit would’ve preferred something more muted. for the dining room with all that dark wood trim, I’m stumped.
“I applaud politicians who are “partisan”. I applaud someone who fights for their cause.
There is nothing wrong with a politician thinking about his re-electrion campaign. That is democracy. The way we hold politicians accountable is re-electing them, or not.”
I totally agree, benson. Another way to put it is that if you think your country’s interests are contrary to what you would be asked to do if asked to serve, you can’t do teh job you are being asked to do. I disagree with bx in that there is no pure national interest that can be discerned that would eliminate any basis for disagreement someone declining to serve on the grounds we are discussing. My point is far more limited — that once Huntsman agreed to serve an important role in the Obama administration, he could not properly do so while entertaining serious thoughts of running against him. That’s what bothers me about him if he runs in 2012. 2016 would be a nonissue for me.
