[And now, I must go teach the kids tonight’s lesson: How to use type in Photoshop. And, for those who care, while I will try and explain the difference between font and typeface, I believe it is a lost cause. If, however, I can get them to pronounce leading correctly and understand what kerning is, I will consider it a win.]
“Vast swaths of the market have behaved stupidly over and over again (as should have been pointed out way back whenever whoever was bitching about liberals not learning their lessons)”
You’re standing in one of the most amazing machines ever built complaining about a couple of defects. Do you go out to eat at Daniel and walk out in a huff when there is a smudge on the tableware? Capitalism creates. Socialism destroys. Unfortunately, capitalism is more abstract and therefore harder to understand, and since people on average aren’t that bright, socialism is almost impossible to weed out.
Socialism is nice and simple in its wrongness. Take one guy’s stuff and give it to another guy. It ignores the complex consequences that flow from that of course, but why think about difficult and abstract things if you can get yourself elected by promising to steal from the rich and give to the poor?
M4L – are you finding properties (am guessing you are looking at co-ops or condos) that are cheaper than what you would find in BK?
Have you considered Battery Park City???? I love it down there!
“Well, in the end they usually do end up with more toys.”
And if all you want is toys, then it makes perfect sense. It’s like if I wanted a bunch of potatoes, I’d have gone into potatoes. And if I wanted a bunch of money, I’d have gone into the money business.
Lech, for me, I would contrast Kirschner to Lula, last President of Brazil and grew up out of the left.
This is a guy who came up from the ranks, 4th grade education, mechanist, trade union leader. This man was able to implement sensible and pragmatic policies, continuing the excellent financial reforms of the Cardoza gov’t, keeping strict fiscal and monetary policies in place, while giving incentives to the poor, facilitating credit to the middle class, aggressive support of the agricultural sector. He was able to straddle the old socialist policies, still provide supports to the poorest sectors with incentives toward education, social mobility, reducing the rich/poor differentials (worst in the world) while powering ahead, developing industry, agriculture, new trade relationships, strategic links to commmodity consumers (China, India) and even derivative exchanges internationally. He also played kissy face with Castro, Chavez, Morales and Ahmadinejad – not so good – but the point is that he had the political skill to negotiate so many pitfalls and still power the country ahead.
Contrast him (definately leading from the pragmatic left) to Kirschner. Night and Day.

“So I think I’ll stick to the “batshit irrational corrupt rightwing capitalists” for now,
thank you very much.”
Hey, if you can live with working for them, knock yourself out. And I have no desire to move to Argentina, though both Canada and France seem nice.
“batshit irrational corrupt rightwing capitalists”
Well, in the end they usually do end up with more toys.
